Connect - Communicate - Create
The Metal Arts Guild of Canada is pleased to announce its
biannual juried exhibition at Arta Gallery, in the Distillery
District from Oct 31st to Nov 19th, 2009. We invite visual artists
to participate in the juried exhibition by creating a 2 dimensional
artwork to compliment the theme. “MAG 2067 - Crafting the
Future”
MAG celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2007 and we wondered what it
would be like to look 60 years into the future. As no one has a
crystal ball we decided to give you several possible options of
what Canada would be like in 2067. Did you know that in the year
2067 Canada is celebrating its bicentennial? It seems so far away
but what changes to our economy, lifestyle and environment would
affect our day to day living. For the call for entry we have
developed five (5) possible timelines of the future in Canada in
2067. We invite visual artists: painters, photographers and
printmakers to pick a scenario and submit artwork reflecting the
theme. Guild members will be creating metal objects, jewellery,
hollowware and sculpture inspired by the concepts of the “possible
futures”.
Can you make artwork that compliments the MAG theme? Is it a
portrait of the people from the future? What do you think jewellery
and hollowware look like in the future? What does the landscape and
architecture look like? Each entry will be judged on its
responsiveness to the theme and selected artwork would be included
in the Metal Arts Guild exhibition “MAG 2067 - Crafting the
Future” at Arta Gallery from Oct 31st to Nov 19th, 2009.
Opening reception and costume party, Saturday, Nov 7th from 5:00 to
7:00.
The five possible futures to choose from are:
2067 Greener Future or Global Disaster - One is imagining
how the earth will change with global climate change. How will
green energy affect the future? What resources are no longer
available? Can you make a “green” piece?
Apocalyptic 2067 - There are about 150 of us and we all live
underground in old mining shafts. We repair old machines and make
new tools to help us survive. What local materials are available?
Do you use found objects to create your artwork?
Metal in Space - Designing for weightlessness one has to
comprehend there is no top or bottom, front or back. This is truly
sculpture “in the round” and will be viewed from any angle. If you
were selected to work as a visual artist in space, what direction
would you take your design?
Regression 2067 - By 2067, the global economy has fallen
into isolated communes and fortresses, much like the medieval era
of the 13th and 14th centuries. What forms would visual art take if
it were used for its purchasing power as well as its beauty?
Scientific and Technological Utopia - The advancement of
science and technology has changed Canada and the world. With
utopian living standards, societies have replaced their “normal”
functions and reduced their time spent eating, sleeping and even
reproduction with artificial means. What could art in a utopian
future look like?
