PROGRAM

. .
Motivator Man
was a great success!

Emmanuel Lopez, the motivational speaker, encouraged everyone to draw on their passions, make connections, and find a way to sell the sizzle. The talk was called "How to press play when you're stuck on pause" and it was the perfect tonic for the February blahs.

NEXT UP is the well known Annual MAKER'S SYMPOSIUM

This annual Symposium explores the many directions metalsmithing can take. This year's guests are
Charles Jevons, blacksmith and sword maker
Shoshana Farber, metalsmith specializing in ethically sourced metal and gems
Tony Deluca, metalsmith using cuttlefish casting

Hear from different metalsmiths working in different environments and at different stages of their careers. Listen to their stories, ask them questions about the choices they have made: the pitfalls and successes that have defined their individual paths.

Nuit Blanche 2009

Craftsmanship names an enduring, basic human impulse, the desire to do a job well for its own sake.”

The work of one’s hand can reveal much about the soul. It takes 10 000 hours of practice to become an expert – at anything. Roughly, 3 hours a day, 20 hours a week, for 10 years of your life.  Your brain requires this length of time to assimilate and consolidate and process information. Dedication, perseverance, precision, accuracy, sensitivity, dexterity, agility are all necessary for mastering a craft.

The Metal Arts Guild of Canada will be presenting a collection of 10 000 metal objects symbolizing the combined 10 years of dedication it takes to create one craftsman.

CALL FOR ENTRY

We would like you to submit your scrap metal objects or anything made of metal.  Ideal pieces are your practice plates, maquettes, and samples. You are not required, nor is it recommended for you to make something new. What we are looking for are the things that helped you in process, which helped you learn. There is no guarantee that you will get your pieces back – the sheer number of pieces in the exhibition will prevent us from being able to accurately track your work. Brass and copper are better than silver – pieces of value are likely to be stolen. Try not to censor what you submit, but please send metal that has been worked on, not just off cuts. Please send us the smallest pieces possible, 1" x1" is ideal, no bigger than 3” x 3”. Due to the volume of pieces that we need for the exhibition we would like you to send us as many as you can. Everyone who submits will be credited as a contributing artist.

The final 10 000 pieces will be mounted and lit for display outside the Metal Arts Guild of Canada head office on the night of Nuit Blanche.

Deadline for submission is September 18, 2009

WAIT/WEIGHT Exhibition

While at Terminal 1 in Pearson International Airport, our exhibition was seen by over 6000 people per day or nearly 750 000 people over the course of the exhibition. BecauSe of a generous grant from The Greater Toronto Airport Authority we were able to pay all of the artists a $270 exhibition fee. The work was very well received and was featured in the Airport’s Toronto Pearson Today Magazine, and a television feature on Roger’s cable
The exhibition then had it’s public opening at the Metal Arts Guild of Canada’s head office at the Garden Party, held August 9, 2008. We appreciate all that attended and all that participated.
