Bob McDonald

The host of Quirks & Quarks is Bob McDonald. One of Canada's best-known science journalists, Bob has been presenting the program since 1992. His extensive background in science broadcasting includes numerous science documentaries for CBC Radio's Ideas series and location stories and investigative reports for CBC's As It Happens and Morningside. Bob McDonald has also produced, written and hosted over one hundred educational videos, written for the Globe and Mail, and before joining Quirks & Quarks he was the host of CBC Televison's children's science program, Wonderstruck. He is also the author of two books based on the program, Wonderstruck I and Wonderstruck II.

Fall 2000 saw the release of Bob's latest book, Measuring the Earth with a Stick: Science as I’ve Seen it. The book, which was short-listed for the Canadian Science Writers Association Book Award, is a collection of essays reflecting on his 25 years as a science journalist. Bob has shared in the dozens of prizes and awards bestowed upon Quirks & Quarks. He was also personally honoured for his contributions to the public awareness of science with the 2001 Michael Smith Award for Science Promotion, from NSERC, and the 2002 Sandford Fleming Medal from The Royal Canadian Institute. Bob is also a weekly science commentator on Newsworld Morning, and science correspondent for CBC TV's The National. In February 2003, Bob was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Guelph.

Jay Ingram has been the host of Discovery Channel Canada’s Daily Planet since it began in 1995. At the time it was the only hour-long, prime-time daily science show in the world. Prior to joining Discovery, Jay hosted CBC radio’s national science show, Quirks and Quarks, from 1979 to 1992. During that time he won two ACTRA awards, one for best host, and several Canadian Science Writers’ awards. He wrote and hosted two CBC radio documentary series and short radio and television science stories for a variety of programs. He was a contributing editor to Owl magazine for ten years, and wrote a weekly science column in the Toronto Star for twelve. Jay has also written ten books.

He has received the Sandford Fleming medal from the Royal Canadian Institute for his efforts to popularize science, the Royal Society’s McNeil medal for the Public Awareness of Science and the Michael Smith award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. He is a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Alberta, has received five honorary doctorates and is a member of the Order of Canada.

Sandra Noble Goss

Sandra Noble Goss has been a full-time professional jewellery and metal artist since graduating from George Brown College’s jewellery program in Toronto in 1973. She began her jewellery studies at Hornsey College of Art in London, England and had previously received a BA from York University in Toronto. Since 1973 she has been a partner of Goss Design Studio with her husband and fellow metalsmith, Andrew Goss. They share an attic studio located in their 100+ year old home in Owen Sound. Sandra sells her work through her own studio, through craft galleries and shops across Canada. Throughout her career she has exhibited widely in jewellery and craft exhibitions and juried shows receiving numerous awards over the years, including the Steel Trophy, Best in Show at MAG's 200O "Behind Glass" juried Show. She enjoyed giving a home to the trophy while the show travelled. She has participated in MAG shows since a student at George Brown and remembers MAG meetings at the Manor Road Church. Teaching part-time in the Jewellery + Metals Program at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario allows her to mentor young jewellers. This September she has a show of etched wall panels with hidden jewellery at Lafreniere & Pai Gallery in Ottawa.
